City Council Elections

ELECTION OFFICIAL

The City Clerk is the election official and the Secretary of State's designated filing officer for elected officials. The City Clerk is the filing officer for Campaign Disclosure Statements, Statements of Economic Interest and other reports required by the Fair Political Practices Commission. The City Clerk also receives and validates mandatory filings for candidates, designated employees and elected officials while coordinating consolidated and special elections with the County of Riverside Registrar of Voters.  

VOTER REGISTRATION

Voter registration forms are available from 7:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Monday through Thursday at Calimesa City Hall, 908 Park Avenue, Calimesa, CA 92320.  You may also register to vote on-line with the California Secretary of States office. Login to their website here to Register to Vote.

CITY COUNCIL CANDIDATE INFORMATION AND PROCESS

In an effort to provide accurate information regarding the process of running for a seat on the Calimesa City Council we present the following:

CANDIDATE ELIGIBILITY

To be a candidate for the Office of Council Member of the City of Calimesa, you must be at least 18 years of age, reside in the Calimesa City Limits and be a registered voter in the City of Calimesa at the time nomination papers are issued.  The registration of all persons receiving nomination papers will be verified with the Riverside County Registrar of Voters.

CANDIDATE FILING AND NOMINATION PROCEDURE - Pursuant to Election Code § 10220

The next City Council Election will be held on Tuesday, November 5, 2024 for three (3) members of the City Council with full terms of four (4) years. The nomination, or candidate filing period opens at 7:00 am Monday, July 15, 2024 and closes on Thursday, August 8, 2024 at 5:30 p.m. for the November 5, 2024 General Municipal Election.  If an incumbent (current office holder) does not file within the initial candidate period, the candidate filing period will be extended for five calendar days and the extended candidate period will close at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, August 14, 2024.  

A Notice of Intention to run for office will not be accepted by the City Clerk until the opening of the appropriate Nomination Period.  A notice of election will be posted and published by the City Clerk prior to the opening of the Nomination Period announcing the election and the dates and times of the nomination period.  Once the Nomination Period is opened, those who desire to be a City Council Member Candidate should contact the City Clerk and schedule an appointment to receive a nomination packet and instructions.  Please allow at least 30 minutes when meeting with the City Clerk.  This will provide sufficient time to receive the nomination packet, instruction and important information from the City Clerk of the nomination process.

POLITICAL REFORM ACT - Statement of Economic Interest & Campaign Expenditure Statements.

All candidates for municipal office are subject to the provisions of the State Political Reform Act of 1974, as amended. The Fair Political Practices Commission (FPPC) has been charged with carrying out the provisions of the Act. 

CANDIDATE FILING FEES/COSTS

There is no direct filing fee for candidates for City Council.  However, there are costs associated with the filing of a Candidate Statement with the Riverside County Registrar of Voters.  These costs vary each election and will be provided when receiving the nomination packet from the City Clerk.  Riverside County Registrar of Voters filing fees are as follows:

VERIFICATION OF NOMINATION PETITION SIGNATURES:  The Riverside County Registrar of Voter's office charged a $0.50 per signature for verification of Nomination Petition Signatures.  Candidates are required to pay the cost of this service.  An amount of $12.50 will be collected for this fee.

CANDIDATE STATEMENTS:  Candidates may file a Candidate Statement at the time of filing for elected office to be printed in the Voter Information Pamphlet and for posting on the Riverside County Registrar of Voters website.  Candidates are required to pay a deposit in the proportionate cost as determined by the Riverside County Registrar of Voters office for printing and distribution of the statement.  Following the election, candidates will either receive a refund for any overpayment or will be invoiced for charges in excess of the deposit amount.
